Glyn Philpot and the Modern Portrait
Glyn Philpot was a Royal Academician at thirty-nine and one of the most sought-after portraitists in London. He could have painted society sitters for the rest of his life. Instead he kept changing, and by the 1930s his work had become flatter, cooler and far more modern than his early patrons expected.
The paintings
Our winter exhibition brings together five paintings from 1910 to 1922.
- Mary Borden, the novelist, painted with the confidence of his best society work
- The Sisters of the Artist, a double portrait painted in 1922
- Siegfried Sassoon, painted in 1917 and lent from a private collection
- Melampus and the Centaur, a mythological subject on a large scale
- Girl at Her Toilet, a quiet interior from early in his career

The exhibition opens in Chelsea after Visionaries closes. The viewing room is already open for collectors who want an early look.
